We are currently planning the Twenty-Third Annual William Byrd Festival for its scheduled dates of August 7-23, 2020. This year’s festival will explore Byrd’s musical roots, with a special focus on his teacher and mentor Thomas Tallis. If circumstances permit, our final concert on August 23 will feature Tallis’s monumental forty-voice motet Spem in alium. English conductor and organist Mark Williams hopes to come back to Portland this year to explore two generations of English Renaissance music with the singers of Cantores in Ecclesia. He will be joined by returning guest Dr. Ross Duffin, early music maven and popular NPR host for nearly two decades, and by regular contributors to the Festival, Dr William Mahrt, lecturer, Dr Kerry McCarthy, lecturer and singer, and Blake Applegate, conductor and singer. A final decision regarding the feasibility of the 2020 Festival will be taken in June when further information will become available. In the meantime, we hope that the many who have supported--and participated in--the Festival over the years remain safe and well.
